Iran, US to hold high-stakes talks in Oman Saturday: What to know
Iran appeared to confirm Trump’s earlier announcement about nuclear talks due this Saturday, but stressed that they would be indirect.
Iran's top diplomat stated Tuesday that US special envoy Steve Witkoff will lead "indirect" negotiations with Tehran on the country's nuclear program in Oman this weekend. His remarks came a day after US President Donald Trump announced the talks, but he described them as "direct," highlighting continued disagreement between the two sides over the nature of the negotiations.
Speaking to Iranian state television, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the goal of the talks was "restoring rights of people" and securing the lifting of sanctions. “For the time being, indirect is our preference. And we have no plan to alter it to direct," he added.
Araghchi confirmed the talks hours after Trump's announcement in a post on X early Tuesday morning local time.
“Iran and the United States will meet in Oman on Saturday for indirect high-level talks,” Araghchi wrote. “It is as much an opportunity as it is a test. The ball is in America's court.”
