As Germany prepares for a new coalition government under the Christian Democrat Friedrich Merz, experts remain divided on whether the incoming leadership will approve the deal to sell Eurofighter Typhoon jets to Turkey.
While some analysts expect the Merz-led cabinet to move forward with the sale of the Eurofighters, others caution that political sensitivities over Turkey’s democratic backsliding could delay or derail the process.
Al-Monitor reported earlier this week that the outgoing German government, led by the Social Democrat Olaf Scholz, had decided to leave the final decision on the sale up to the new government, slated to be sworn in May 6.
Germany’s Handelsblatt had reported last week that the deferral was largely due to concerns over democracy in Turkey, particularly the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, a presidential contender from the main opposition Republican People’s Party.
