What's behind Syrian authorities' arrest of former Assad officers?
Syria’s transitional government has been arresting remnants of the ousted regime, including officers involved in alleged war crimes and drug trade.
Syria’s security forces arrested on Monday a former intelligence officer, as the new authorities press on with their crackdown against officials affiliated with the former regime following the fall of President Bashar al-Assad in December.
The Interior Ministry said in a statement that the Security Directorate in Damascus countryside apprehended Shadi Adel Mahfouz, who worked at a branch of the Military Intelligence during the Assad era. According to the statement, Mahfouz was in charge of recruitment in the Military Security Branch and was allegedly involved in war crimes.
Mahfouz is also accused of taking part in the recent attacks by regime remnants against security and military forces in coastal Syria.
