DUBAI — The United Arab Emirates' top presidential adviser is in Iran to deliver a message from US President Donald Trump regarding possible nuclear talks with the country's supreme leader, the Islamic Republic's state newswires reported on Wednesday.
Anwar Gargash, the UAE's senior diplomatic adviser, arrived in Tehran on Wednesday to meet Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Mehr News Agency reported on Wednesday. The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs was unavailable for comment on Gargash's visit and his agenda in Tehran.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said earlier on Wednesday that Gargash would "meet and consult" with Araghchi and hand-deliver a letter from Trump, according to Iran's semi-official ISNA news agency.
The meeting follows comments by Trump on March 7 that he intends to negotiate a nuclear deal with Iran and had sent a letter to Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
