Turkey accuses Israel of destabilizing region by driving wedge in Syria
Israel’s actions toward Syria's new interim regime risk fomenting further instability in the region, a Turkish official told Al-Monitor.
ANKARA — Turkey is concerned that Israel's military actions in Syria as well as its reported efforts to keep the country politically fractured could cause further instability in the region, a Turkish official has warned.
The warning follows reports of Israeli lobbying efforts in the United States to ensure Syria remains politically fragmented. In a series of meetings with top US officials as well as members of Congress, Israeli officials submitted a proposal to keep the Syrian government decentralized as a way to balance Turkey's increasing influence in the country, Reuters reported last week, citing four sources familiar with the matter.
“Instead of supporting Syria, some countries are taking actions against Syria’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity,” a Turkish official told Al-Monitor, discussing the sensitive issue on condition of anonymity.
“No one in the region will want to face the consequences of the failure of the Syrian administration,” the official added.
