Russia's Putin sends letter to Sharaa offering Syria 'practical cooperation'
The letter follows Putin and Sharaa speaking on the phone in February and thousands of Syrians seeking refugee at Russia’s base in the country earlier this month.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said he supports efforts to “stabilize” Syria in a letter to his Syrian counterpart, Ahmed al-Sharaa, the Kremlin announced on Thursday, in the latest overture from Moscow to Damascus.
What happened: Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that Putin indicated his support for “efforts to stabilize the situation in the country as soon as possible in the interests of ensuring its sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity” in the letter to Sharaa, the official Tass news agency reported.
Putin also noted “Russia's continuing readiness to develop practical cooperation with the Syrian leadership on the whole range of issues on the bilateral agenda in order to strengthen traditionally friendly Russian-Syrian relations,” Peskov said.
Contacted by Al-Monitor, the Syria foreign ministry was not immediately available comment.
