Qatar is set to deliver natural gas to Syria via Jordan, Syrian and Qatari officials said on Friday, one day after the Gulf state announced a plan to provide electricity supplies as part of efforts to support Syria’s infrastructure and energy sector.

What happened: Syrian Minister of Electricity Omar Shaqrouq was cited by the official SANA news agency as saying that Qatar will supply 2 million cubic meters of natural gas per day to the Deir Ali power plant south of the capital.

The gas will be transported through the Arab Gas Pipeline, which passes through Jordanian territory, Shaqrouq explained during a Friday meeting with Qatar’s charge d’affaires in Syria, Khalifa Abdullah Al Mahmoud Al Sharif, in Damascus.

The supplies will help generate 400 megawatts of electricity daily and increase daily power from two to four hours, Shaqrouq said, noting that Syria’s electricity needs are estimated at about 6,500 megawatts.
