Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu removed Mossad chief David Barnea and Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar from the negotiating team working toward the release of hostages and a ceasefire in Gaza, appointing loyalist Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer in their stead to lead the talks.
According to Haaretz, Netanyahu also appointed a former deputy of the head of the Shin Bet to the team whose name was not released.
The change comes against the backdrop of the expected continuation of talks on the second phase of the deal with Hamas, set to begin after 42 days, which should see the release of the remaining hostages in Gaza and hundreds of Palestinian prisoners. The full withdrawal of the Israeli military from the Strip should also take place in the second phase, per the agreement.
US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff said on Sunday that talks on the second phase would continue this week "at a location to be determined."
