Iran's FM hosts Sudan counterpart, eyes larger influence: What we know

TEHRAN — Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi voiced his country's support for the Sudanese government in what it described as "the battle against insurgency," according to a report by the IRNA on Monday.
At a joint press conference in Tehran alongside his Sudanese counterpart, Ali Youssef Ahmed al-Sharif, the Iranian minister condemned attacks on Sudan's infrastructure, emphasizing that national dialogue was key to Sudan's stability.
Sudan plunged into chaos in April 2023, when the country's army entered a bloody fight against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. The struggle for power between army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo has particularly hit the Khartoum and Darfur regions. The conflict has left thousands dead, forcing millions to flee from one of the world's worst humanitarian crises.
As an indication of growing diplomatic and economic ties that were restored in October 2023 following a seven-year hiatus, the two ministers signed agreements on visa waivers and political consultations.
