Thursday’s US-Russia talks in Turkey come as Ankara seeks to assert its role as a facilitator in US-Russia and Russia-Ukraine negotiations.
ANKARA — Turkey will host technical talks between the United States and Russia on Thursday, according to Russian, Turkish and US officials, as Ankara works to strengthen its role as a facilitator in Russia's negotiations with the United States and Ukraine.
As part of direct talks initiated by the Trump administration, the United States and Russia agreed during their Feb. 18 meeting in Riyadh — the most significant diplomatic US-Russia engagement since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 — to fully restore their respective diplomatic missions.
Earlier Wednesday Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said diplomats fom Moscow and Washington would meet in Istanbul as part of the understanding on diplomatic missions.
“A meeting will take place tomorrow in Istanbul. I think that its results will show how quickly and effectively we can move forward.” Lavrov was quoted as saying by AFP.
