Syria's top diplomat set to pay first visit to Turkey on Wednesday: What we know
Experts believe that Turkey’s and other regional countries’ security concerns will be key agenda items during the visit.
ANKARA — A high-level delegation from Syria’s new administration, led by Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani, is set to make its first visit to Ankara on Wednesday, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday.
Shibani, Syria’s Interim Defense Minister Murhaf Abu Qasra and Intelligence Chief Anas Khattab are expected to meet with their Turkish counterparts, Hakan Fidan, Yasar Guler and Ibrahim Kalin respectively, the ministry said in a statement without elaborating.
Shibani announced his visit in Turkish. “To represent the new Syria, we will make our first official visit tomorrow (Wednesday) to the Republic of Turkey,” he wrote on X.
Fluent in Turkish, Shibani was appointed to his new post while pursuing a Ph.D. at Istanbul’s Sabahattin Zaim University and is known to have close ties with Ankara.
