Iran’s navy unveils Zagros, its first intel-monitoring vessel: What we know
The vessel delivered to Iran's navy on Wednesday is the latest addition to country's domestic military capabilities.
Iran unveiled its first locally made signals intelligence vessel Wednesday to be added to the country’s navy, in the latest sign of the country’s growing domestic defense industry.
The new vessel, named the Zagros after the Iranian mountain range, is equipped with electronic sensors, interceptors and other capabilities to conduct cyber operations and intelligence monitoring.
The Zagros was introduced during a ceremony at a naval base along the Gulf in Bandar Abbas, was attended by top-ranking military officials, including Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Maj. Gen. Mohammad Hossein Baqeri, Army Commander Maj. Gen. Abdolrahim Mousavi, Navy Commander Rear Admiral Shahram Irani and Defense Minister Brig. Gen. Aziz Nasirzadeh, according to state media outlets.
“The Zagros will serve as the watchful eye of Iran’s navy in the depths of the seas and oceans,” Irani said during the ceremony. “This vessel, created with domestic knowledge and capabilities, is set to operate in the region, showcasing our naval strength."
