Syria's new foreign, defense ministers close to Turkey, influential in HTS
Following the toppling of Bashar al-Assad, Syria’s new transitional government swiftly filled vacancies by appointing new foreign and defense ministers on Saturday.
Two weeks following the ouster of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Syria’s new transitional government has appointed foreign and defense ministers.
Syria’s ruling General Command announced on Saturday the appointment of Assad Hassan al-Shibani as interim foreign minister. An official source told Reuters on Saturday that the new government had also appointed an interim defense minister, Murhaf Abu Qasra.
Syria’s de facto leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, formerly known as Abu Mohammed al-Golani, held a meeting on Saturday with multiple armed factions, including the new defense minister, according to SANA. The new government is currently working to unify the many armed factions that made up Syria’s opposition to Assad’s government.
On Sunday, Sharaa announced at a press conference that all weapons would be placed under state control and that armed factions would "begin to announce their dissolution” and integrate into Syria’s army.
