WASHINGTON – The Biden administration has tasked the US military with overseeing international monitoring of a ceasefire set to begin before dawn on Wednesday between Israel and Hezbollah.

American and French military personnel are expected to work directly with UN peacekeepers in Lebanon, as well as with the Lebanese security forces and the Israeli army to receive reports of violations and liaise with both sides to avoid any flare-ups in hostilities, a senior administration official confirmed Tuesday.

“There will be no US troops deployed in southern Lebanon,” President Joe Biden said in a speech from the Rose Garden earlier on Tuesday.

“This is designed to be a permanent cessation of hostilities,” Biden added.
