Shootings in Daraa leave 9 dead as instability plagues Syria’s south
Daraa, located close to the Jordanian border, is experiencing competition between armed groups and rampant drug smuggling amid the government’s inability to control the situation.
A vehicle belonging to a pro-government armed group was attacked in southern Syria’s province of Daraa on Wednesday evening, according to a local report, adding to the list of violent incidents in the region in the last month.
What happened: The local news outlet Daraa 24 reported that a violent explosion occurred in between the towns of Kiheel and Al-Musayfirah in the province, followed by gunfire. The target of the attack was a vehicle belonging to the Eighth Brigade, according to the outlet. There was no immediate information on casualties.
The Eighth Brigade was established by Russia after the government's victory in Daraa in 2018 and consists of former rebel fighters. Russia backs the Syrian government in the ongoing civil war.
Earlier on Wednesday, Daraa 24 reported that a vehicle was shot at overnight in the town of Jasim, which is located north of Daraa city, resulting in injuries to a woman and a child.
