Does Israel warning foreshadow shift on Iraq policy under Trump?

Israel warns Iraq on PMUs

Israel put Iraq on notice this week that unless pro-Iran Iraqi militias — known as Popular Mobilization Units, or PMUs — cease their attacks, the Jewish state is within its rights to retaliate.

In a letter to the Security Council on Nov. 18, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar referred to “hundreds” of such attacks by Iraqi PMUs since Oct. 7, 2023, including one on an Israeli military base last month that killed two soldiers and injured 24 others.

Saar wrote that under international law the government of Iraq is responsible for the actions of the militias.
