Congress bill seeks to block US arms sales to UAE over Sudan war
The resolution and legislation introduced by Sen. Chris Van Hollen and Rep. Sara Jacobs comes amid international frustration with the escalating Sudanese civil war, as well as the UAE's denial of involvement in the conflict.
Two members of Congress introduced legislation on Thursday to restrict US weapons sales to the United Arab Emirates over the Gulf state’s alleged support of Sudanese rebel forces fighting the country's military since April 2023.
Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) introduced a bill to prohibit the sale or issue of an export license of defense articles covered under the Arms Export Control Act to the UAE until the president "certifies" to Congress that "the United Arab Emirates is not providing materiel support to the Rapid Support Forces in Sudan."
The Arms Export Control Act authorizes the president to control the import and export of defense articles and services.
Van Hollen added a joint resolution of disapproval for the sale of 259 Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System missiles and 203 Army Tactical Missile System missiles, as well as various forms of training, engineering, software, logistics and technical support.
