What UAE's Edge expansion into space means for country's military industry
Abu Dhabi has recently seen a significant boost in its domestic defense and aerospace capabilities, thanks to its nation-based conglomerate, EDGE. This month, the group launched its new space company, FADA, marking a milestone in enhancing the Emirati’s status in the strategic space sector.
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) defense giant, EDGE Group—a conglomerate of over 35 entities specializing in military and civilian products with a focus on advanced technology and defense—has made a pivotal move into the space sector. On September 23, it launched a new company, FADA, aimed at strengthening the nation's defense-related space capabilities, further highlighting EDGE's integral role in the UAE’s defense strategy.
EDGE’s rapid growth in the defense industry is evident from its expanding portfolio and international partnerships across Asia, Europe, and Latin America. The group’s commitment to innovation is underscored by the launch of two new centers of excellence focused on radar and electronic warfare. This expansion aligns with a broader strategy driven by significant investments in research and development, with EDGE dedicating 15% to 20% of its annual revenue to R&D.
Swift rise in defense market
Since its establishment in 2019, EDGE Group has quickly earned a formidable reputation in the global defense market. Just one year after its inception, it became the first Arab company from the Middle East to be ranked among the top 25 largest defense manufacturers by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). By 2021, Defense News ranked EDGE as the 24th largest defense contractor globally. Today, EDGE is recognized as one of the top three suppliers of precision-guided weapons in the world.
