Iran FM Araghchi meets Egypt’s Sisi amid diplomatic push: What we know
The Iranian foreign minister held talks with President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, during which both agreed on the need to promote relations between the two countries.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on Thursday hosted Iran’s top diplomat, Abbas Araghchi, who is in Cairo on the first official visit to Egypt by an Iranian foreign minister in more than a decade.
The meeting, which was also attended by Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty, focused on the latest developments in the region, where Israel has escalated its airstrikes against Hezbollah in Lebanon in tandem with its offensive in the Gaza Strip.
According to an Egyptian presidency statement, Sisi stressed the need to end the escalation in the region “in order to prevent sliding into a full-scale regional war, which will have serious repercussions on the security and capabilities of all countries and peoples of the region.”
Sisi underscored the necessity of intensifying international efforts to reach a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon and put an end to the Israeli violations in the West Bank.
