Cyprus arrests eight Syrians accused of funding terror group: What we know
The arrests come as more Syrians arrive in Cyprus, fleeing the conflicts in Lebanon and Syria.
Authorities in Cyprus on Thursday arrested eight Syrian nationals suspected of funding an unidentified terrorist organization based in Syria.
Seven men and one woman were detained during raids on apartments and other properties in the two districts of Limassol and Paphos in the south of the small Mediterranean island.
They are being held on suspicion of conspiring to commit a felony, participating in a criminal organization and violating anti-terrorism laws, according to police spokesman Christos Andreou. Five of those arrested live in Limassol; the other three live in Paphos.
The operation, led by the Cyprus Police Headquarters Criminal Investigation Department, came after authorities received intelligence that the suspects were involved in funding a terrorist organization and drug trafficking.
