Who were Palestinian commanders in Lebanon targeted in latest Israeli strikes?
Israel has frequently targeted Hezbollah commanders and leaders in Lebanon since the start of the cross-border hostilities, as well as members of Palestinian armed groups that joined Hezbollah on the southern front.
BEIRUT — The commander of Hamas in Lebanon and three leaders of another Palestinian group were killed in separate Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon early Monday, as the Israeli army continues to intensify its attacks across the country, mainly striking Hezbollah targets and members.
Hamas announced in a statement the killing of its commander in Lebanon, Fateh Sharif Abu al-Amin, who is also a member of the group’s leadership abroad, along with his wife, daughter and son, when an Israeli strike hit their home in the Palestinian el-Buss refugee camp in the southern city of Tyre.
The Israeli military said Abu al-Amin was in charge of coordinating Hamas’ activity in Lebanon with Hezbollah and was responsible for the group’s efforts in recruiting operatives and purchasing weapons.
In addition to his role in Hamas, Abu al-Amin headed UNRWA's Teachers' Association in Lebanon and was the principal of the UNRWA-run Deir Yassin school in el-Buss camp. In March, the UN refugee agency suspended him from work amid controversy emerging from his support of Hamas' Oct. 7 cross-border attack on southern Israel.
