Trump threats, Houthi blockade rattle oil markets

Since our last newsletter, another key energy trade route via the Middle East has been disrupted due to the widening of the Iran war, with Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels imposing a blockade on Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea ports. The kingdom has redirected more than 70% of its crude oil exports to the western port of Yanbu, but now shipments bound for Asia face the threat of a Houthi blockade. This week, we also look at a planned nuclear deal between the United States and Saudi Arabia.
