Former tank commander takes over as Israel's military chief

Former tank commander Eyal Zamir was sworn in as Israel's new army chief on Wednesday, inheriting the task at a crucial time for the military after it acknowledged its "complete failure" to prevent Hamas's October 7, 2023 attack.

Previously director of the defence ministry, Zamir replaces chief of staff Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi, who resigned admitting he had failed to fulfil his mandate.

Zamir, 59, takes over at a sensitive time in Israel's war with Hamas, with the ceasefire that took effect on January 19 hanging in the balance.

Trump warns Gaza 'you are dead' if hostages not freed

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday threatened further destruction of Gaza if all remaining hostages are not released, and issued an ultimatum to Hamas leaders to flee.

The United States meanwhile confirmed unprecedented indirect talks with Hamas, which it proscribes as a "terrorist" group, focused on American hostages in Gaza.

Strongly backing Israel as the ceasefire teeters, Trump said he was "sending Israel everything it needs to finish the job" as his administration expedites billions of dollars in weapons.

Over 200 attend Pro-Palestinian protest near Columbia University

More than 200 pro-Palestinian protesters gathered Tuesday in front of Columbia University in New York to demonstrate against former Israeli prime minister Naftali Bennett, who was at the campus for a speaking engagement.

After more than a year of protests at the campus by both supporters of Israel and opponents of the assault on Gaza after the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, the appearance of the former leader of Israel's far-right was met with expected pushback.

Car bomb attack in northwest Pakistan kills 12, wounds dozens

At least 12 civilians were killed, including three children, and dozens injured Tuesday evening after two explosive-laden vehicles were detonated at an army compound in northwest Pakistan, officials said, with the attack quickly claimed by a militant group.

The massive explosions and an ensuing gunfight occurred at sunset, as people were breaking their fast during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif denounced "cowardly terrorists who target innocent civilians during the holy month of Ramadan" and "deserve no mercy".

This list however is by no means exhaustive and Francis's successor could well be someone else.

US designates Yemen's Huthis 'foreign terrorist organization'

The United States on Tuesday designated Yemen's Huthi militant group a foreign terrorist organization, conforming with an order by President Donald Trump in January.

The Iran-backed rebels control much of Yemen, including the capital Sanaa, and have launched missile and drone attacks at Israel since the war in Gaza broke out in October 2023.

They have also repeatedly targeted merchant vessels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden -- waterways vital to global trade.

Israel says Palestinian militants killed as it expands West Bank offensive

The Israeli military announced Tuesday it had expanded its weeks-long offensive in the occupied West Bank to more areas of Jenin city, saying troops killed three militants although Palestinian officials reported two dead.

On its 43rd day, Israeli forces "expanded the counterterrorism operation in northern Samaria to additional areas in Jenin", the military said, using the Biblical name for that part of the West Bank.

It said that a local Hamas leader and another Palestinian militant were killed in an exchange of fire with troops during an overnight raid in Jenin.

Tunisia puts opposition figures on mass trial decried as 'absurdity'

The trial of several prominent Tunisian opposition figures accused of national security offences opened on Tuesday, with lawyers and relatives denouncing the case as politically motivated.

The around 40 high-profile defendants include activists, politicians, lawyers and media figures, some of whom have been vocal critics of President Kais Saied.

They face charges including "plotting against the state security" and "belonging to a terrorist group", according to lawyers, which could entail hefty sentences and even capital punishment.

Chinese lessons in Saudi schools show growing ties

With a map of China on the wall behind him, 14-year-old Yasser al-Shaalan studied the names of professions in a Chinese textbook, one of thousands of Saudi children now learning the language at school.

Mandarin's entry into public schools is the latest sign of growing ties between Saudi Arabia and China, as the oil-rich Gulf kingdom pushes to diversify its economy and strategic alliances.

"The pupils at the other schools are proficient in English. I know Arabic, English and Chinese, which is a great asset for my future," Shaalan told AFP.
