How aid has just trickled into quake-hit Afghanistan

(Reuters) -Afghanistan's Taliban government has appealed for help from the world after more than 1,100 people were killed in one of the deadliest earthquakes to hit the impoverished nation in recent years, saying it needs urgent aid.

But relief has been hard to come by to a country largely ignored by the world since the 2021 Taliban takeover. Here is a list of aid provided and promised in the wake of the disaster:

Israel builds up forces ahead of Gaza City offensive

Israeli reservists began responding to call-up orders on Tuesday, swelling the military's ranks ahead of a planned offensive to capture Gaza City after nearly two years of devastating war.

Despite mounting pressure at home and abroad to end its campaign, Israel has recently been stepping up operations as it lays the groundwork for seizing the Palestinian territory's largest urban centre.

Gaza's civil defence agency said Israeli forces killed at least 85 people on Tuesday across the Strip, which has been in the grips of a major humanitarian crisis for months.

JERUSALEM/CAIRO (Reuters) -Tens of thousands of reservists started to report for duty on Tuesday ahead of a new Israeli offensive in Gaza City, which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wants to speed up, despite warnings from senior ranks.

Israeli Army Radio said that some 40,000 reservists would report for duty on Tuesday for the Gaza City offensive. The military said it was readying logistically for the intake of reservists ahead of the offensive.

Freed Hamas hostage Or Levy on a 'mission' in South Africa

Tears streamed down the faces of some of the hundreds of people gathered in a synagogue in Johannesburg as Or Levy described his release after 491 days as a hostage of Hamas.

Levy was brought to South Africa, the country that filed a case of genocide against Israel at the International Court of Justice, by the local branch of the Jewish National Fund (JNF), a state-linked Israeli organisation.

Since May 2024, local Jewish groups have organised at least 16 similar events with former captives, survivors or families of victims of the militant group's October 7, 2023 attack.

UN Afghanistan coordinator says damaged roads are biggest challenge after deadly quake

(Reuters) -Blocked road access to people hit by Afghanistan's earthquake have been the biggest challenge for response teams and rescue efforts in the impacted mountainous regions are relying on helicopters, a United Nations official said on Tuesday.

"There's been lots of landslides and rock falls, and access has been very limited to everybody in the first 24 hours," Indrika Ratwatte, the United Nations' humanitarian coordinator in Afghanistan, said in a press briefing, speaking from Kabul.

Denmark high court rules Dane in IS was spy, not jihadist

Denmark's Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that a Dane of Syrian origin who was jailed for having spent time with the Islamic State (IS) group in Syria was in fact an informant for Danish intelligence services.

The case has captivated the Nordic country for years and has shone an embarrassing spotlight on its intelligence agencies.

The ruling paves the way for Ahmed Samsam, 35, to seek a reversal of his 2018 conviction in Spain for being a member of the jihadist group.

Belgium to recognise Palestinian state at UN General Assembly

(Reuters) -Belgium will recognise a Palestinian state at the U.N. General Assembly, Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot said on Tuesday, adding to international pressure on Israel after similar moves by Australia, Britain, Canada and France.

Under mounting global criticism for its war in Gaza, Israel has been angered by the pledges to formally recognise a Palestinian state at a summit during this month's U.N. event.

Sidelining Trump, China's Xi rolls out carpet for Ukraine war aggressors

By Joe Cash

BEIJING (Reuters) -In a show of solidarity with the aggressors in Europe's worst war in 80 years, China's Xi Jinping will convene with his Russian and North Korean counterparts for the first time as Donald Trump and other Western leaders watch on.

The gathering of Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un in Beijing this week is testament to the Chinese president's influence over authoritarian regimes intent on redefining the Western-led global order while Trump's threats, sanctions and tariff-driven diplomacy strain long-standing U.S. alliances, geopolitical analysts say.
