New strikes threaten ceasefires in Iran, Lebanon

Tehran on Tuesday accused Washington of breaching their ceasefire and warned it was ready to retaliate after overnight US strikes, while Israeli bombardment in Lebanon left dozens dead, threatening an increasingly fragile truce there.

The Brent benchmark oil price jumped up by more than three percent after US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced the new wave of bombings targeting Iranian missile sites and mine-laying boats, while China urged both sides to respect the truce and to resolve their dispute peacefully.

Iranian officials have stressed that, despite the long-standing US demand for an end to its uranium enrichment, talks on the issue of Iran's contested nuclear programme have been deferred until after an initial agreement

Three months of classes held online in Iran because of the war

Every afternoon since Iran's war with the United States and Israel erupted, Sarah has sat with her seven-year-old son for online classes. And despite the current ceasefire, schools remain closed.

The new routine has upended their lives.

The 38-year-old mother was relieved when lessons moved online after the war began on February 28, with US-Israeli strikes hitting military as well as civilian infrastructure, including schools, in nearly 40 days of fighting.

Trump says US will not 'rush into a deal' with Iran, as criticism mounts

President Donald Trump said Sunday that he had told US negotiators "not to rush into a deal" with Iran amid anticipation -- and mounting criticism -- of an agreement to end the war in the Middle East.

"The negotiations are proceeding in an orderly and constructive manner, and I have informed my representatives not to rush into a deal in that time is on our side," Trump wrote on his Truth Social account.

"The Blockade will remain in full force and effect until an agreement is reached, certified, and signed," he wrote.

Netanyahu told Trump Israel will remain free to act against threats, Israeli source says

By Emily Rose

JERUSALEM, May 24 (Reuters) - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told U.S. President Donald Trump Israel would remain free to act against threats in Lebanon during a phone call about an emerging agreement between Washington and Iran on Saturday, an Israeli source said.

Trump said Washington and Iran had "largely negotiated" a memorandum of understanding on a peace deal that would reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping passage that has been effectively closed since the U.S. and Israel launched their war on Iran in February.

Yemen family deprived of aid reduced to eating tree leaves

With no food aid, 65-year-old Saeedah Mohammed heads out with a plastic bag to pick tree leaves near her displacement camp in southern Yemen, before serving them to her grandchildren to stave off hunger.

Behind the camp wooded hills stretch under a clear sky, while on the ground, yellowed and stony earth is strewn with rubbish.

Amid the trash and destitution, daily life manages to organise itself, however imperfectly.

Worn-out clothes dry on lines strung between spindly trees, and two old discarded tyres lie in the dust.

Possible Iran-US deal: What we know

The United States and Iran appear closer than ever to a deal that would end a war that has engulfed the Middle East and disrupted the global oil market.

However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday he had agreed with US President Donald Trump that any final deal must fully end Iran's "nuclear threat".

Iran's Tasnim news agency said its information was that key clauses of a possible agreement remained unresolved, including the issue of frozen Iranian assets.

Turkish riot police enter opposition headquarters to evict ousted leaders

ANKARA, May 24 (Reuters) - Turkish riot police fired tear gas and broke through the gates of the main opposition party's headquarters to evict its ousted leadership on Sunday, a Reuters witness said.

An appeals court on Thursday ousted Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Ozgur Ozel, annulling the results of the CHP congress where he was elected in 2023, citing irregularities.

The court reinstated in his place former CHP chairman Kemal Kilicdaroglu, who lost to President Tayyip Erdogan in a national election that year.
