Iran missile fire kills two in central Israel: medics

An Iranian missile barrage killed two people near Israel's commercial hub Tel Aviv, medics said Wednesday, with the national railway company announcing shrapnel impact disrupted train services.

Authorities reported that falling munitions had hit multiple sites in central Israel in the overnight barrage that triggered air raid sirens across the area, after another day of heavy Israeli bombardments in Iran and Lebanon.

The latest deaths took the toll from missile attacks on Israel since the start of the Middle East war late last month to 14 people.

Russia's Rosatom condemns strike on territory of Iran's Bushehr nuclear plant

March 17 (Reuters) - Rosatom, Russia's state nuclear energy corporation, condemned a strike on the territory of Iran's Bushehr nuclear power plant on Tuesday and called for de-escalation around the facility.

"We categorically condemn what has occurred and call on all sides in the conflict to use every effort to de-escalate the situation around the Bushehr nuclear power plant," the head of Rosatom, Aleksei Likhachev said in a statement.

Milei blasts Iran on anniversary of attack on Israeli embassy

Argentina's President Javier Milei on Tuesday slammed Iran and reiterated his support for the United States and Israel as he attended an event commemorating a deadly attack on the Israeli embassy in Buenos Aires some thirty years ago.

The bombing on March 17, 1992 involved a truck packed with explosives ramming into the Israeli embassy in the Argentine capital, killing 22 people and injuring more than 200.

Ali Larijani, Iran's ultimate backroom powerbroker, dies at 67

March 17 (Reuters) - Veteran Iranian politician Ali Larijani was one of the most powerful figures in the Islamic Republic, an architect of its security policy, and a close adviser to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei until the supreme leader's death in an airstrike last month.

He has been killed at the age of 67, Iranian media said on Tuesday. Israel's Defence Minister Israel Katz said earlier on Tuesday that he had been killed in an Israeli strike.

US carrier Ford, deployed in war with Iran, to go to port temporarily after fire

WASHINGTON, March 17 (Reuters) - The U.S. aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford, deployed in operations against Iran, is expected to temporarily pull into port after a fire on board, U.S. officials said on Tuesday, the 18th day of the war with Tehran.

The carrier, America's newest and the world's largest, is currently located in the Red Sea. It is expected to temporarily go to Souda Bay on the Greek island of Crete, the two officials said.

USS Gerald R. Ford: the world's biggest aircraft carrier

The USS Gerald R. Ford -- the world's largest aircraft carrier -- is playing a key role in the US-Israeli war against Iran, but has suffered problems during its extended deployment.

The carrier has now been at sea for almost nine months and will reportedly soon set sail for the island of Crete for repairs after a blaze broke out aboard the ship last week.

Iran war is not delaying US weapons shipments to Taiwan, officials say

WASHINGTON, March 17 (Reuters) - The war on Iran has not delayed shipments of weapons to Taiwan or changed U.S. policy toward the island, officials from President Donald Trump's administration told members of Congress on Tuesday, despite the demands of the intense air campaign.

"Have we delayed moving things to Taiwan? We haven't," Stanley Brown, principal deputy assistant Secretary of State for Political-Military Affairs, told a House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee hearing.
