UK's Sunak says strikes on Huthis 'successful'

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said Monday that his government believed that all planned targets had been destroyed in last week's US-led strikes against Iran-backed Huthi rebels.

The British leader also told lawmakers that there were no reports of civilian casualties from the joint strikes, which occurred overnight between Thursday and Friday.

"I can tell the House (of Commons) today that our initial assessment is that all 13 planned targets were destroyed," Sunak said during an address to parliament, describing the strikes as "successful".

Looking over his shoulder for eavesdroppers in a cafe, an Israeli anti-war campaigner leaned closer to a woman who plans to refuse military enlistment, risking jail time during Israel's unrelenting Gaza offensive.

"The decision to refuse is brave," said activist Nave Shabtay Levin, 20, who was jailed for 115 days until last March for refusing the draft.

"It is more brave during wartime," he said, addressing 18-year-old Sofia Orr who sat next to him in an outdoor Tel Aviv cafe.

Houthi missile hits US-owned ship off Yemen: US military

Yemen's Huthi rebels hit a US-owned cargo vessel with a missile on Monday, the US military said, heightening fears for the volatile region after repeated attacks on shipping triggered American and British strikes.

After the Western strikes against scores of rebel targets last Friday, the Huthis said they would not be deterred and declared that US and British interests were "legitimate targets".

The Marshall Islands-flagged Gibraltar Eagle suffered a fire on board but no casualties and remained seaworthy, the US Central Command said, after the latest attack in recent days.

Turkish strikes deprive hundreds of northeast Syria villages of power

Hundreds of northeast Syrian villages and towns have lost power, with water supplies also affected, after Turkish strikes pounded electricity stations and infrastructure, the region's semi-autonomous Kurdish administration said Monday.

The Kurdish administration said Turkey had launched a series of strikes since Friday, mostly concentrated on infrastructure including power stations and oil refineries.

UK announces biggest military deployment to NATO exercises in decades

Britain will send 20,000 armed forces personnel to one of NATO's largest exercises since the Cold War, Defence Secretary Grant Shapps announced on Monday, warning of increasing threats to the Western-led alliance.

The deployment, which Shapps characterised as the UK's biggest to NATO in four decades, is aimed at "providing vital reassurance" over the "menace" posed by Russian President Vladimir Putin following his invasion of Ukraine, Shapps said.

Jailed Iranian Nobel winner hit with new sentence: family

An Iranian court has sentenced 2023 Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi to an additional sentence of over one year in prison on charges of spreading propaganda against the Islamic republic while behind bars, her family said on Monday.

The Revolutionary Court sentenced Mohammadi to 15 months in prison after a trial that she boycotted, her family added in their statement.
