Israel forges buffer zone inside Gaza at risk to civilians: experts

Israeli forces in Gaza have systematically destroyed buildings in an attempt to create a buffer zone inside the Palestinian territory, experts and rights groups told AFP, raising fears over the civilian cost.

The plan, not publicly confirmed by Israel, appears to entail taking a significant chunk of territory out of the already tiny Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip, something experts as well as Israel's foreign allies have warned against.

Huthis vow response after US, UK strike dozens of Yemen targets

Yemen's Huthis said Sunday US and British air strikes "will not deter us" and vowed a response after dozens of targets were hit in retaliation for the Iran-backed rebels' repeated Red Sea attacks.

The joint air raids in Yemen late Saturday, denounced by Iran, followed a separate wave of unilateral American strikes against Iran-linked targets in Iraq and Syria in response to a drone attack that killed three US soldiers in Jordan.

Goalkeeper saves Qatar in shootout to set up Iran semi at Asian Cup

Goalkeeper Meshaal Barsham was Qatar's hero as the hosts and holders beat Uzbekistan 3-2 on penalties on Saturday to put them into an Asian Cup semi-final with Japan's conquerors Iran.

Barsham saved three times in the penalty shootout after the quarter-final with Uzbekistan ended 1-1 following 120 minutes of stalemate.

Pedro Miguel slotted in the winning penalty for Qatar in front of almost 60,000 fans at the tent-like Al-Bayt Stadium north of Doha.

The triumphant Qatar players tossed Barsham in the air at the end.

US reprisals against Iran-linked groups anger Iraq, Syria

Deadly US strikes on Iran-backed forces in Syria and Iraq drew sharp condemnation from the region Saturday, after President Joe Biden vowed further action in retaliation for a deadly attack on American troops.

The United States, whose late Friday strikes killed 45 people, blamed Sunday's drone attack that hit a US base in Jordan on militants backed by Tehran.

US forces however did not strike inside Iranian territory, with both Washington and Tehran seemingly keen to avoid all-out war.

Egypt orders review of pyramid restoration after outcry

Egypt's antiquities ministry said Saturday it was setting up a committee to review the restoration of Giza's Menkaure Pyramid after a public outcry over the project.

A week ago, the head of Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities, Mostafa Waziri, posted a Facebook video showing workers setting blocks of granite on the base of the shortest of the three Giza pyramids.

The footage sparked a storm of criticism from Egyptologists who voiced fears that a wholesale reconstruction of the famed monument was under way, to the detriment of the preservation of its historic fabric.
