By Tom Balmforth and Michelle Nichols

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) -Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned NATO and the European Union on Saturday that "any aggression against my country will be met with a decisive response."

As Russia's war rages in Ukraine, tensions have mounted along NATO's eastern flank in recent weeks as Estonia has accused Moscow of sending three fighter jets into its airspace and NATO jets shot down Russian drones in Polish airspace.

Colombian President Petro accuses US of violating international law after visa revoked

BOGOTA (Reuters) -Colombian President Gustavo Petro on Saturday dismissed the U.S. decision to revoke his visa and accused Washington of violating international law over his criticism of Israel's actions in Gaza.

The U.S. said on Friday it would revoke Petro's visa after he took to New York's streets on Friday to join a pro-Palestinian demonstration and urged U.S. soldiers to disobey President Donald Trump's orders.

CAIRO/RAMALLAH (Reuters) -Hamas has not received U.S. President Donald Trump's Gaza ceasefire plan, the Palestinian group which runs the enclave said on Saturday as Israeli forces expanded their assault on Gaza City.

The comments came after Israeli newspaper Haaretz cited sources saying Hamas had agreed in principle to release all the Israeli hostages it holds in return for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners and the gradual withdrawal of Israeli troops under Trump's plan.

Iran defiant on restored sanctions as it recalls ambassadors

DUBAI (Reuters) -Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said the reimposition of global sanctions over Iran's nuclear programme is "not like the sky is falling" as he headed home on Saturday from New York where he failed to convince Western powers to delay the move.

Iran's immediate reaction to the resumption of United Nations sanctions came with the announcement earlier on Saturday it was recalling its ambassadors to Britain, France and Germany for consultations, but it has warned a harsher response awaits.

Carrefour name disappears from Arab stores as Israel boycotters claim victory

The Carrefour name has disappeared from storefronts in some Arab countries, with pro-Palestinian shoppers and activists hailing the shift as a victory for their boycott of brands perceived as being linked to Israel.

The French multinational has long been in the crosshairs of Palestinian supporters, who accuse it of selling products from Israeli settlements and partnering with Israeli firms operating there.

The group has denied operating in the settlements in the occupied West Bank, which are considered illegal under international law.

Pakistan-Saudi defence pact oozes with unknowns

The new mutual defence pact signed by Pakistan and Saudi Arabia this month surprised many and came just days after the Gulf region was rattled by Israeli strikes on a Hamas compound in Qatar.

The agreement comes at an especially volatile time in the wake of both Iranian and Israeli strikes on Doha, uncertainty over the future of Tehran's nuclear programme, and clashes between India and Pakistan in May.

Pakistan and Saudia Arabia's mutual defence pact is rooted in a long tradition of military cooperation between the two countries

Hezbollah marks one year since Israel killed then-chief Nasrallah

BEIRUT (Reuters) -Lebanese armed group Hezbollah on Saturday will commemorate one year since its then-chief Hassan Nasrallah was killed by Israel, the opening salvo of a war that ultimately battered his once-powerful group and left swathes of Lebanon in ruins.

On the evening of September 27, 2024, a string of Israeli bunker-busting bombs on a Hezbollah complex in Beirut's southern suburbs killed Nasrallah, who had led the powerful Shi'ite religious, political and military group for more than 30 years.

'Snapback': What sanctions will be reimposed on Iran?

A raft of UN sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program, lifted under a landmark 2015 deal, went back into force late Saturday.

The sanctions were reimposed because the "E3" European group -- Britain, France and Germany -- triggered a mechanism in the deal alleging Tehran was not meeting its obligations.

Here are some key facts about the so-called "snapback" process:

Sweeping UN sanctions return to hit Iran after nuclear talks fail

Widespread UN sanctions against Iran returned into force late Saturday for the first time in a decade, after last-ditch nuclear talks with Western powers failed to produce a breakthrough.

The sanctions, three months after Israel and the United States bombed Iran, bar dealings related to Tehran's nuclear and ballistic missiles program and are also expected to have wider effects on its troubled economy.

European and US diplomats stressed immediately after the resumption of sanctions that diplomacy was not over.
