Israel says will fight during Ramadan unless Hamas frees hostages

Deadly fighting raged on in Gaza on Monday after Israel warned that, unless Hamas frees all hostages, it will push on with its offensive during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, including in the far-southern Rafah area.

Global concern has mounted over the fate of 1.4 million Palestinians who fighting has forced into Rafah near the Egyptian border, where they endure bombardment and dire food shortages in crowded makeshift shelters and tents.

Israeli swimmer booed at world swim championships

Israeli Anastasia Gorbenko shrugged off boos from the crowd at the world swimming championships in Doha on Sunday.

Gorbenko took silver in the 400m freestyle but the crowd in Qatar whistled when she went up to collect her medal, and before in the post-race poolside interview.

"It's not the first time, I've been here a week," she commented.

"I've heard all these noises but I'm with ear plugs, I'm in my zone.

"I'm here to do what I love to do, which is sport, I'm here to represent my country.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva accused Israel Sunday of committing "genocide" against Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip and compared its actions to Adolf Hitler's campaign to exterminate Jews.

Displaced Israelis comforted by taste of home in Tel Aviv kitchens

After weeks of living in hotel rooms, Sigal Chayak from northern Israel broke into tears the first time she got to cook her family a meal again.

"My life is the kitchen," said Chayak, 55.

Without it, the ordeal of leaving her home -- along with the tens of thousands evacuated from the border area with Lebanon -- has been all the more difficult.

As soon as she finally had access to a kitchen, she immediately set to cooking her late mother's soup.

Prospects dim for truce as Israel rejects calls to spare Rafah

Israel's army pressed on Sunday with its campaign in southern Gaza to destroy Hamas as prospects dimmed for a ceasefire in the more than four-month-old war.

Afghanistan special envoys meet in Doha

National and regional special envoys to Afghanistan convened in Doha Sunday in the second UN meeting of its kind in less than a year, though it remained unclear whether Taliban authorities would join the closed-session event.

The two-day meeting, hosted by the UN secretary-general, was due to discuss increasing engagement with Afghanistan and a more coordinated response to the Central Asian nation.

In the aftermath of the Taliban's return to power in Afghanistan in 2021, the international community has wrestled with its approach to the country's new rulers.

The Working Group on Women said the meeting in Doha is a chance for the UN to show women's rights are 'not negotiable'

Long winter for Morocco quake survivors

Long, cold months have passed since an earthquake levelled Abdallah Oubelaid's impoverished village in Morocco's High Atlas mountains.

Every day, he or other villagers come to inspect the debris. They hope to find pieces of wood for heating and cooking, or even to recover objects of value that have so far escaped them, and all the while a bitter Oubelaid wonders when he will get the government aid that he applied for.

"Every time I ask, they tell me it's going to happen," Oubelaid, 35, said. "But I have children to feed and to clothe."
