Good-as-gold Iranian hands back recovered treasure to owner: report

An Iranian man searching through the rubbish found a bag containing gold and dollars and returned it to its owner, a local newspaper reported on Monday.

"My parents taught me that you should return property belonging to others when you find it," the inhabitant of Aligudarz, a city in western Iran, was quoted as telling the daily Etemad.

The 52-year-old found the bag last month while searching through rubbish bins placed in the streets, the report said.

Jordanians keep up Ramadan rallies for Gaza ceasefire

Jordanian protesters have taken to Amman's streets nightly in their thousands during Ramadan, transforming the normally festive Muslim month into a solemn show of solidarity with Palestinians in war-battered Gaza.

"I don't think we can celebrate," said Ahmed al-Tubeigi, 32, ahead of the holiday of Eid al-Fitr later this week, which marks the end of the fasting month.

"It would be shameful," he said during a rally on Sunday.

"There's no Eid atmosphere."

Gazans return to 'indescribable' destruction of Khan Yunis

Safa Qandil returned home to Khan Yunis in southern Gaza on Monday only to find that she no longer has one.

Thousands of displaced Gazans have been trudging back through the apocalyptic landscape of the devastated city after the Israeli army pulled out on Sunday following months of fierce fighting with Hamas militants.

But as often as not it is to find their home is no longer there.

"We hoped we would find the house or the remnants of it or take something from it to cover us," Qandil, 46, told AFP.

"We did not find the house," she said.

Iran FM accuses US of approving strike on Damascus consulate

Iran's foreign minister again accused the United States Monday of approving a deadly strike blamed on Israel that destroyed Tehran's Damascus consulate last week, after he inaugurated a new consulate in the Syrian capital.

Cyprus president discusses Syrian refugee influx in Lebanon visit

Lebanon's Prime Minister Najib Mikati and visiting Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides discussed migration on Monday in Beirut, both sides said, as Nicosia pushes the Lebanese authorities to stem boat departures.

Cyprus says the Israel-Hamas war, which has triggered a flare-up on the Israel-Lebanon border, has weakened Lebanon's efforts to monitor its territorial waters and prevent migrant vessel departures.

The Mediterranean island nation has reported a surge in Syrian arrivals in recent weeks.

Nicaragua has hauled Germany before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to demand judges impose emergency measures to stop Berlin from providing Israel with weapons and other assistance.

Hamas, Israel discuss Gaza truce

Hamas said Monday it is studying a proposal for a truce and hostage-prisoner swap after talks in Cairo, as Israel's defence minister said it is the right time for a deal, six months into the Gaza war.

Israel is under growing international pressure to agree a ceasefire, including from its top ally and arms supplier the United States, and faces mounting calls to refrain from a threatened offensive against the teeming southern Gaza city of Rafah.

Germany faces charges from Nicaragua at the top UN court on Monday that it is "facilitating the commission of genocide" against Palestinians with its military and political support for Israel.

Nicaragua has hauled Germany before the International Court of Justice (ICJ), demanding judges impose emergency measures to stop Berlin providing Israel with weapons and other assistance.

Germany has hit back at the allegations, with Sebastian Fischer, spokesman for the German foreign ministry, telling reporters ahead of the hearings: "We reject the allegations from Nicaragua."

'Stay strong!' Thousands rally for Gaza hostages in Jerusalem

Thousands gathered on Sunday in front of Israel's parliament to demand the return of the hostages abducted by Hamas militants in Gaza exactly six months ago.

"Stay strong you who are still there," cried 17-year-old former hostage Agam Goldstein with tears in her eyes.

The teenager was freed in a deal with Hamas at the end of November.

About 250 Israelis and foreigners were taken hostage by militants on October 7.

The army says 129 are still being held in Gaza, including 34 who are presumed dead.

'It smells like death': Gazans return to devastated Khan Yunis

"It smells like death," said Maha Thaer, a mother of four, as she returned to the devastated southern Gaza city of Khan Yunis on Sunday, after Israeli troops withdrew.

"We don't have a city anymore -- only rubble. There is absolutely nothing left. I could not stop myself crying as I walked through the streets," the 38-year-old told AFP.

"All the streets have been bulldozed. And the smell... I watched people digging and bringing out the bodies," said Thaer, whose home was partially destroyed.
