Israel reserves 'right to protect itself' after Iran attack: Netanyahu

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his country reserved the right to protect itself after Iran's unprecedented attack, and that it alone would decide how to do so.

Iran launched more than 300 drones and missiles at Israel over the weekend in an attack that caused little damage after most of the projectiles were intercepted.

The Israeli military has vowed to respond, prompting a diplomatic flurry aimed at calming the Middle East.

Iran shows military might as tensions with Israel soar

As regional tensions run high, Iran paraded drones, missiles and soldiers on Wednesday to show it is ready for any response from Israel after launching an unprecedented attack on its bitter enemy.

The Islamic republic carried out its first-ever direct attack on Israel at the weekend in response to an April 1 air strike on its consulate in Damascus which has been widely blamed on Israel.

The operation dubbed Honest Promise "brought down the glory of the Zionist regime (Israel)", President Ebrahim Raisi said at a military base on the outskirts of Tehran.

Amnesty accuses US-backed Syria Kurds of torture, other abuses

Amnesty International accused US-backed Kurdish authorities in northeastern Syria Wednesday of resorting to torture and other abuses in their detention of tens of thousands of suspected jihadists and their dependents.

The London-based watchdog said Washington too "likely" violated the human rights of detainees in Kurdish custody.

Camps and prisons run by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) still hold more than 56,000 detainees with alleged or perceived links to the Islamic State group, five years after the jihadists were ousted from their last territory in Syria.

Dubai reels from floods chaos after record rains

Dubai's giant highways were clogged by flooding and airport passengers were urged to stay away on Wednesday as the glitzy financial centre reeled from record rains.

Huge tailbacks snaked along six-lane expressways after up to 254 millimetres of rain -- about two years' worth -- fell on the desert United Arab Emirates on Tuesday.

At least one person was killed after a 70-year-old man was swept away in his car in Ras Al-Khaimah, one of the country's seven emirates, police said.

Security Council to vote Thursday on Palestinian state UN membership

The United Nations Security Council will vote Thursday on the Palestinians' application to become a full UN member state, several diplomatic sources have told AFP.

Amid Israel's military offensive in Gaza, the Palestinians in early April revived a membership application first made to the world body in 2011, though the veto-wielding United States has repeatedly expressed opposition to the proposal.

The General Assembly can admit a new member state with a two-thirds majority vote, but only after the Security Council gives its recommendation.

Digital 'sleuths' fuel misinformation after Iran strikes

Terrified onlookers crouch behind a wall as lights streak across the night sky in what self-proclaimed digital investigators claimed was footage of Iranian drones over Israel. But the video is months old, repurposed to sow misinformation.

Social media sites such as X, formerly Twitter, were swamped with misrepresented visuals after Iran launched an unprecedented wave of drones and missiles toward Israel at the weekend, exacerbating Middle East tensions during an ongoing war that has already seen a flood of misinformation.

Will Israel have to choose between Iran retaliation and Gaza assault?

Israel has vowed to respond to Iran's unprecedented attack and to send troops into Gaza's overcrowded Rafah area in its war against Hamas, but experts say it cannot achieve both goals simultaneously.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has appeared determined to move ahead on both fronts but has not offered a timeline for either.

He would likely have to take into account pleas from top ally the United States for restraint after Tehran's drone and missile attack -- as well as calls for the protection of Palestinian civilians in the besieged Gaza Strip.

Israeli media have suggested the Rafah offensive was due to start this week, but plans were upended by the Iran attack

White House gives cautious nod to Ukraine, Israel bills

The White House said Tuesday that separate aid bills set for a vote in the US House this week appear to meet the long-delayed military needs of Ukraine and Israel.

But US President Joe Biden needs to study the proposals by Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson more closely before making a final decision, it added.

Johnson said Monday that his Republican-controlled chamber would vote this week on the bills after after stalling for months over pressure from his party's right-wing. Whether Johnson can get his deeply divided party to support him, however, remains to be seen.

Dubai airport diverts flights as 'exceptional weather' hits Gulf

Dubai's major international airport diverted scores of incoming flights on Tuesday as heavy rains lashed the United Arab Emirates, causing widespread flooding around the desert country.

The world's busiest air hub for international passengers confirmed a halt to arrivals at 7:26 pm (1526 GMT) before announcing a "gradual resumption" more than two hours later.

Earlier the airport, which had been expecting more than 100 flight arrivals on Tuesday evening, took the equally unusual step of briefly halting its operations in the chaos caused by the storm.
