Israeli Schools to Address Attack On Arab Teenager in Jerusalem

Article Summary
Israeli teachers will offer lessons addressing a recent attack on an Arab youth by several Israeli teenagers in Jerusalem when schools open next week. The education minister said the incident, which left the youth hospitalized, was "extremely grave" for its violence and racism.

The school year will open next week with classes dealing with the attempted lynching that took place last week in Jerusalem.

Education Minister Gideon Sa’ar instructed schools throughout the country to hold special classes on the incident that took place in Zion Square in the city, at the conclusion of which a young Arab was hospitalized in serious condition. Minister Sa’ar explained, “This is an extremely grave incident, both in terms of the violence as well as the racism involved. The fact that a large number of youths participated in it, adds to our worry. The educational system must transmit, and will transmit, a sharp, clear educational and values-based message on the subject.”

A civics teacher wrote an open letter on this very issue on Facebook Wednesday, which elicited many reactions on the social network. The teacher, Amnon Rabinowitz from the Jerusalem Ziv (Sieff and Marks) high school, attacked the educational system vociferously and argued, “the perpetrators of the lynch are alienated children cut off from the world who grew up in a society with a deficient educational system. The story of these children needs to come to the attention of those people who still think that school is [only] a place ‘to teach material,’ by a Ministry that mainly glorifies, day after day, the unremitting pursuit of grades and matriculation [certificates] …This week in which the new school year begins, should not cause us to hate. It should remind us all that we are here to educate children and educate everyone.”
