The Zar trans religious ceremony, which uses drumming and dancing to cure an illness thought to be caused by a demon, is most prominent in southern Egypt and is practiced further south into the Sudan, though in fact it may be performed anywhere in Egypt. القاهرة – في ممرّ ضيّق في حيّ عابدين في قلب القاهرة الخديويّة، تقيم فرقة "أسياد الزار" حفلاً تقليديّاً داخل مسرح صغير وسط البيوت القديمة، بالدفوف والآلات الموسيقيّة التقليديّة، لتعيد إلى الذاكرة المصريّة في الأسبوع الأوّل من كلّ شهر، فنّ الزار الذي اختفى تدريجيّاً من الثقافة الشعبيّة المصريّة خلال العقدين الآخيرين.

"إحياء الموسيقى الشعبيّة والبحث عنها من منابعها وتقديمها إلى الجمهور"، هي الهدف من عودة حفلات الزار، حيث يتحدّث إلى "المونيتور"، الباحث الموسيقيّ ومؤسّس مركز المصطبة للموسيقي الشعبيّة المصريّة زكريّا ابراهيم، قائلاً: "الزار ينقرض في مصر... ومن يعرفونه ويمارسونه يعانون من صعوبة في الاستمرار".
