رجل المليشيات ليس مجرّد حامل سلاح أو قاتل. فهو أيضاً حاكم فعلي للحيّ الذي يعيش فيه، يعيد إنتاج عصر "أشقياء بغداد".

عنصر المليشيا في الشارع العراقي ليس مجرّد حامل سلاح. فهو يمارس عملياً سلطة دينيّة وأخلاقيّة واقتصاديّة على محيطه الاجتماعي، ويؤدّي دور حاكم الحيّ في مواسم إلقاء السلاح والمجرم في زمن القتل.

محمد ينتمي إلى إحدى المليشيات الشيعيّة المعروفة في العراق. هو يصرّ على مناداته بالشيخ محمد، الاسم حركي الذي يعرفه به أهالي منطقته في البياع (جنوب بغداد). يقول محمد إنه لا يحمل السلاح في العادة إلا عندما يتلقى أوامر بذلك من مرجعياته. وما حصل في حيّ البياع أخيراً، جاء رداً على تفجير مقهى تورّط به أحد السكان.
