VoxBox: Israel Demo Economy
On July 7, several thousands Israelis took to the streets of Tel Aviv in protest of the skyrocketing cost of living and the country's deteriorating social services. Similar demonstrations have been taking place every Saturday at the break of Sabbath for the past few weeks. Protesters say they are fed up with Israel's corrupt financial system and politics and are asking for a welfare state. They are also hoping to resurrect last summer social justice protest movement that saw hundreds of thousands of people occupy the streets of Tel Aviv. According to a recent survey published in the Israeli daily Haaretz, 75 percent of the Jewish Israeli population supports the protest movement.
