VoxBox: Egypt Vote Shafiq

Despite security roadblocks and heavy army presence, hundreds of Egyptians made their way to the Supreme Constitutional Court in Cairo on June 14 to find out about decisive rulings two days ahead of the presidential run-off. The court ruled (1) to let former regime stalwart Ahmed Shafiq run in the second round despite a law preventing Mubarak's senior officials from participating in political life after the revolution and (2) to dissolve the parliament, elected last November in the country's first free and fair poll. Some told Al-Monitor the rulings amounted to a military coup; whereas the army was only supposed to ensure a peaceful transition to civilian power after Mubarak's ouster last year.
