Iranian President Hassan Rouhani arrived in New York on Sept. 17 to attend the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly, where he will defend the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. Meanwhile in a speech in Tehran, Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, warned of an Iranian response should the United States back out of the nuclear deal reached with the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany.

“The nation of Iran has stood strong,” said Khamenei, speaking to the country’s military leaders. “And any action by [the United States] regarding the nuclear deal will encounter the Islamic Republic’s response.” With respect to the actions Khamenei expects from Iranian officials in response to American threats to back out of the nuclear deal, the supreme leader made a reference to "corrupt American leaders" and said, "Iran is a powerful nation and will not submit to pressure.”
