ALEXANDRIA, Egypt — While drama films have long portrayed fictional heroes of legendary love stories, sometimes real-life love goes beyond all imagination.

One such story began in Homs, Syria, when Mufid’s mother visited the house of Ghouroud’s parents to ask for her hand in marriage. Mufid was working abroad and his parents wanted him to marry a Syrian woman. Ghouroud, who is the neighbor's daughter, had only seen Mufid in photos.
