Dear Mr. Secretary of State, it seems to me as if something went wrong. True, you put your heart and soul into a Sisyphean effort to re-establish contacts between Israel and the Palestinians that were severed for four years. You shuttled back and forth for months, you flew tens of thousands of kilometers, and you were forced to listen to the parties for dozens of hours, all to get them back into the same room to fantasize about a historic peace arrangement between them. But it seems to me that we can already say with all due respect that this was not what you intended.

The negotiations are more or less stuck. There has been no breakthrough so far. In order for something to happen, America will have to get ready to act and either come up with a revolutionary proposal revolutionary proposal to bridge the differences or have someone come up with something outside that familiar box that is the negotiations to help the parties avoid crashing back to Earth. In the meantime, however, the cost is too high and the implications too harsh, for what is a rather scanty product. The fact is that Israel is releasing 104 prisoners convicted of murder, each of whom is responsible for an especially heinous act of murder, and some of their victims were innocent Israelis. This is shaking Israeli society to the core, reaping bedlam and chaos in Israeli politics, and forcing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu — a man whose body may be in the negotiating room, but whose heart and soul are romping across the hills of Judea and Samaria — to “compensate” the settlers.
