يوم الخميس في 26 أيلول/سبتمبر من العام 1962، غادر محمد البدر آخر حكام اليمن (الشمالي حينها) من سلالة الأئمّة الزيديّين، صنعاء بفعل القصف المكثّف على قصره والذي شنّه ضبّاط الجيش وقد أعلنوا ثورتهم ضدّ النظام الإمامي. وتمّ إعلان أوّل نظام جمهوري في الجزيرة العربيّة. لكن السعوديّة وشاه إيران اتّخذا موقفاً عدائياً موحّداً ضدّ هذه الثورة، إلا أنهما لم يتمكّنا من إفشالها.
