A man was arrested after a shooting at a synagogue in New York State on Thursday, the latest in a series of violent incidents at Jewish religious institutions since the start of the Israel-Hamas war.

The New York Times reported that a man fired twice from a shotgun on the premises of Temple Israel in the state capital Albany, located north of New York City. Nobody was injured and the suspect was arrested nearby after attempting to flee. Police said the suspect called out “Free Palestine” while being taken into custody, according to the outlet.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul told reporters that the shooter made “threatening statements” while discharging the weapon.

The local FBI office said late on Thursday that 28-year-old Mufid Fawaz Alkhader was arrested in relation to the incident and charged with possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.
